I’m really bummed that Hulu and Netflix have gotten rid of all their Doctor Who episodes. I never bought any DVDs or downloads because I (perhaps foolishly) thought I could always count on Hulu. It would make this challenge a lot easier if I could go back and watch old episodes to check on things.

Anyway, I’m going with favorite alien race because there are not a lot of Doctor Who aliens that I would want to actually meet! I feel like most of them would try to kill me. Think cybermen, daleks, weeping angels, etc. I’m also excluding Time Lords because that’s too obvious. So my pick is:

Silurians

Silurians are first introduced in Classic Who, although I haven’t watched any of those episodes. The first time we see them in New Who, it’s in the two-part episode “The Hungry Earth” and “Cold Blood.” Since then, they have appeared in several episodes. We’ve only seen glimpses of them in the past couple of years (like in “Face the Raven”) and I really hope that they come back in some upcoming season.

I think the backstory of the Silurians is so intriguing. They are aliens but not extra-terrestrials, having evolved on Earth millions of years before humans. They have superior technology and refer to us as “apes.” The idea that there are colonies of intelligent reptiles hibernating underground is just…creepy. From what I’ve been reading, I need to go watch “Doctor Who and the Silurians” immediately. Darn you, Hulu!

The redesigned Silurians are beautiful. I mean, just look at this:

So detailed, and I love those colors.

The Silurian we see most often is Madame Vastra. Along with Jenny and Strax, she becomes one of the characters that the Doctor can always rely on for help. Neve McIntosh portrays the character so well, with a slightly cold and condescending air, yet still funny. Madame Vastra is definitely one of my favorites.

Plus, she has one of the best lines EVER:

I’ve been inspired to do some more research on the Silurians and their technology and I will do a couple of science-y posts after this challenge is over.
