Can I just mention that I hate favorites? I have been struggling for days to figure out who to pick for this one. Whose idea was it to do a project where you have to pick favorites for 30 days? (I think it was mine.)
Thanks to Kat for reminding me that “favorite” and “best” are not necessarily the same. Once I stopped worrying about picking the best companion, I realized who my favorite has been all along:
Rose Tyler
There’s a t-shirt that says you never forget your first Doctor. I think this is true for companions as well. Rose was the first companion that I watched, and I subconsciously compare all other companions to her. She has a story that many people can identify with – sort of bored and dissatisfied with life and she jumps at the chance to explore the universe. She tries to balance her time with the Doctor and her relationships back home. I realize other companions have similar stories, but again, Rose was the first.
Rose is always up for adventures. Looking back at her seasons, what I remember the most is the fun that she and the Doctor had together. At the same time, she is down-to-earth and relatable. Sometimes you just want chips, okay? Rose understands.
I also love her interaction with the Doctor. Now that we know a little more about the time war, I think Rose was exactly what the Doctor needed right then – someone to laugh with and distract him from the pain.
Rose has quite a good ending for a companion, all things considered. She gets to run off with human-Doctor and spend the rest of her life with him. She definitely didn’t have an easy road getting there, but other companions have far worse endings.
Who would you pick? Let us know in the comments!
